National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos”

NCSRD is the largest multidisciplinary research centre in Greece with approximately 200 Researchers in tenured and tenure-track positions and over 600 Research Personnel working in projects funded mainly by grants from the European Union, the State and the private sector, as well. NCSRD consists of five independent Institutes focusing on different scientific fields. It is governed by a Board of Directors and is supervised by the General Secretariat of Research and Innovation, which is under the Ministry of Development. NCSRD scientists in NuCapCure originate from two Institutes: The Institute of Nuclear & Radiological Sciences and Technology, Energy & Safety (INRASTES) and the Institute of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology (INN).

Role within NuCapCure

The NCSRD contributes to NuCapCure by performing Monte Carlo simulations in support of the in vitro irradiation experiments at UiO (MC-35 Scanditronix cyclotron) and CVR (LVR-15 reactor), respectively (Task 3.1). The irradiation geometries, samples, beam modifiers and nuclear interaction data will be taken into account in order to obtain dosimetry parameters such as the energy deposition, the linear energy transfer (LET), the kinetic energy released in the medium (KERMA) and the absorbed dose in the sample. Monte Carlo simulations in support of the NuCapCure in vivo animal irradiation experiments will be performed (Task 4.2). Models will be developed for the irradiation setups at the proton (UMCG, cyclotron) and neutron (CVR, LVR-15 reactor) facilities.

Our perspective on NuCapCure

NuCapCure is a challenging project for cancer treatment bringing together experts from many different scientific fields. Our group participation will further improve our modelling skills to an exciting new application that may contribute knowledge on cancer therapy that may help many others in the future.
