Beaming into Focus: Exploring the Science Behind NuCapCure
What do photobiology, reactor physics and radiation biology have in common?
In NuCapCure, they are all part of the same scientific story. Developing new approaches to a cancer as complex as glioblastoma cannot rely on one field of research alone. NuCapCure brings together expertise from across biology, chemistry and physics, with each discipline contributing a different piece of the project.
Our Beaming into Focus series on LinkedIn takes a closer look at these fields one at a time – explaining what they are, how they connect to NuCapCure and why the science matters beyond our project. So far, the series has explored photobiology, including how the study of interactions between light and living systems has helped inspire NuCapCure’s approach; radiation biology, which helps researchers understand how living cells respond to ionising radiation; reactor physics, which plays an important role in generating the neutrons needed for NuCapCure research; and proton and neutron physics, looking at the particles that can act as precision triggers in the project’s experimental approach. And there is more still to come.
The final instalments will turn the spotlight on synthetic and medicinal chemistry and nuclear and accelerator physics, completing a journey through the different scientific perspectives coming together within NuCapCure.
The series is also a reminder that interdisciplinary research is not simply about having different experts around the same table. It is about understanding how their knowledge connects – and what can become possible when those connections are explored.
